I am a composer and guitarist living in Miami, Florida. Much of my work explores alternative tunings and involves electronics in one form or another, though I sometimes do not use either. Composition is for me a process of discovery and a way to engage in a dialogue with the many mysterious things I do not understand. Perhaps for these reasons I have a deep fascination with any technique that involves a kind of surrendering, observing, listening, and describing.
I am happy to connect with anyone who is interested in any of the work I do, but also with those who are not.
Below is a short formal third-person bio
BIO
Federico Bonacossa is a composer and guitarist based in Miami whose work explores the intersections of acoustic instruments, electronics, microtonality, and just intonation. His music has been performed throughout the United States and internationally at concerts and festivals including the National Flute Association Convention, the New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival, MOXsonic, the International Guitar Research Conference, SEAMUS, and the Irish Sound, Science, and Technology Association Festival.
Recent works include Entre Tempos, for two flutes, flute ensemble, and electronics, commissioned by the Slippery Rock University Honors Flute Ensemble and performed at the 2026 National Flute Association Convention; Seventides, for solo guitar, commissioned by Carlos Serrano and premiered at the 2026 Timucua International Guitar Festival; and Music in Four Parts, for live electronics. His ongoing AEDO series explores the digital guitar, microtonality, and live electronics.
Bonacossa’s album Elettroarmonico, released by New Focus Recordings in 2024, features his music for instruments and electronics and was featured on ASCAP’s New Music Friday playlist. His electroacoustic works Rests on Water and META have also appeared on releases by Soundologia Records.
His work extends extensively into dance and interdisciplinary collaboration. He has composed numerous original scores for Dance NOW! Miami, including Anusim, Tribe, Terra Mia, and, most recently, Love-less. These collaborations have been presented throughout South Florida as well as in New York, Missouri, Portugal, and Italy. Other collaborative projects include music for choreographer Lazaro Godoy and film.
As a guitarist, Bonacossa is particularly interested in contemporary music, electronics, microtonality, and alternative tuning systems. He is a founding member of The Last Hundred Ensemble, an organization dedicated to the performance and promotion of music written within the last century, and appears as composer and performer on the ensemble’s projects.
Bonacossa is Associate Teaching Professor at Florida International University, where he teaches music theory and related subjects. His work as a composer, performer, and educator reflects a continuing interest in bringing together composition, technology, performance, and new approaches to tuning and musical structure.
